True Friendship

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

“Close friends, that Day, will be enemies to each other, except for the righteous” [Az-Zukhruf]

This verse is talking about a very important issue which I was reminded of over this weekend. It is talking about the relationship that we have with the people we call our friends. It is clearly talking about those relationships we might have with people that we call our friends, but whenever we are around them we are only drawn towards haram (forbidden) things.

There is a lot that can be said in regard of choosing friends. In another ayah in the Quran, Ibrahim AS tells his people that the friendship and love they have for one another is only temporary, in this world. On the Day of Judgment, he tells them, they will disown one another. The friendships we have with the people who cause us to do evil things also fall under this same category.

Therefore, the best friendship to have in this world is the one for the sake of Allah SWT. One note I will make here, what does it mean to love for the sake of Allah SWT. It means that you have love for your teachers of religious knowledge, spiritual guides, reformers, religious scholars, etc… You love those people who love this religion and Allah SWT and his messenger.

Find friends who will cause you to do good things. Find those people who pray, so that when it is time to pray they will ask you to come pray with them. Find those people who go to the masjid on the every now and then instead of the clubs. Find those people who speak good words and stay away from backbiting one another. It might be difficult at first, but stick with it. It will be better for us in the life of this world and in the life of the hereafter inshAllah.
